Reasonable Program Outcomes

It is important to state and restate that a program should not strive for the eradication of pain. In chronic pain syndrome, it is not achievable, and programs or research seeking this outcome fail.

The overall goal for therapy at the pain center is to help patients take more responsibility for their own lives and for their health care and help them become more functional.

Reasonable outcomes include:

  • Reducing the misuse of medications and invasive medical procedures

  • Reducing/eliminating the abuse of health care services for primary pain complaint including fewer hospitalizations and emergency department visit

  • Reducing subjective pain intensity
  • Increasing the patient's level of functions and ability to manage pain and related problems, even if no reduction in pain intensity is feasible

  • Improving and maximizing comfort and physical activity resulting in a return to functional and productive life

  • Improving flexibility, greater endurance, and increased strength

  • Better functions at home for ADD and family interaction

  • Returning to productive activity at home, socially and/or at work.

  • Returning to employment, training or educational pursuit.

  • Providing useful information to the patient and professionals involved in the case resolve any medical, or legal issues

  • Lowering costs of maintenance care
